Many people may consider surfing a dangerous sport, however we can say that it is less dangerous for beginners than for the more advanced. Being a surfer requires a lot of perseverance, discipline and a good physical condition.

"Is surfing dangerous?"

Is surfing dangerous? Yes or not?

When you are a beginner, you will most likely be catching smaller waves with lighter boards, which reduces the risk of major accidents.

Being advanced surfers, they pursue bigger waves and new challenges, therefore, they will face waves that often break with force, and with the risk of suffering blows caused by falls.

Some of the dangers involved in surfing are being exposed to injuries such as sprains, sprained ankles or wrists, being hit on the head by a surfboard, suffering sunburns from spending so many hours in the sun, as next to the reflection of the water the rays intensify.

Before entering the water it is recommended to warm up the muscles. An effective way to do this is to start jogging gently until your heart rate increases, accompanied by stretching exercises. At the end of each session, you should also stretch for the muscles to recover.

Depending on the spot where you surf, you can also end up with a jellyfish sting or a cut if you are in an area with reefs.

If on days when the temperature is low your suit does not protect you enough from the cold, you may suffer from hypothermia. It is not very common, but if you spend many hours in the water, it can happen.

Choosing a quality wetsuit that fits the water conditions where you usually surf, that is your size and keeping it in good condition, are key factors in being protected from the cold in the water.

When the temperatures are high, don’t forget the sunscreen and hydrate yourself. You should drink water before entering the water and after, when leaving to recover the liquid that the body has lost and avoid cramps and heat stroke.

Depending on the country where you surf, you have to take into account the presence of sharks and their feared attacks, as in Australia or America.

If you are a beginner, you can find out beforehand about the spot you want to go to, about its risks and weather conditions. Also by exchanging experiences with surfers you can learn a lot about each place, and by the way, why not make new friends with the same interests as you?

In the Canary Islands you can find beautiful places to explore and paradisiacal beaches, so you can enjoy catching the best waves. In addition, the warm climate that prevails during most of the year, allows you to surf in a unique environment with crystal clear waters and without the presence of sharks.
