If you are thinking about traveling with your pet it is necessary to know that there are a series of requirements to enter the Canary Islands, here we tell you which are so you do not have problems when embarking the trip.
If you travel with your pet you should know …
Pets, whether dogs, cats or ferrets must have a passport or card and / or Certificate of Vaccination (rabies) in addition to Microchip identification, as indicated by current health regulations.
Microchip and vaccines
Your pet must have the microchip that complies with ISO 11784/11785. If your pet’s microchip is not compatible with ISO 11784/11785, you can bring your own microchip scanner.
In addition to the microchip you will need a rabies vaccine that should have been delivered within 21 days of the trip. If the animal already has the rabies vaccine but not the microchip, you will have to take it to implant the microchip and must be vaccinated again. In this case you must keep in mind that you must wait 21 days to travel. In addition to the rabies vaccine, dogs should also be vaccinated against distemper.
Health certificate
A non-commercial health certificate is not required for pets traveling to the Canary Islands from another EU Member State, unless a veterinarian from outside the EU has administered the rabies vaccination, after the pet has received its microchip.
The type of health certificate required for your pet depends on whether the animal is a companion (non-commercial transport) or if it is intended to carry out a purchase or sale transaction.
Must be completed by a veterinary licensed in the country of origin, within 10 days previous to travel.
If the pet travels from the United States or Canada, the veterinarian issuing the health certificate must be USDA or CFIA accredited, respectively, unless issued by a veterinarian from the Veterinary Corps or a GS series veterinarian -0701, employed by the army.
Accompanied animals entering the Canary Islands by air from non-EU countries must do so by the Gran Canaria International Airport.
The EU pet passport is valid for 4 months travel within the EU as long as your pet’s rabies vaccine does not expire. Remember that to travel with a puppy, the minimum age must be 7 months.
This rule applies only to domestic dogs, cats and ferrets. For other types of animals you must request the corresponding additional permits.
